Biologist

Position Objective: Provide services as a Biologist in support of the overall functions of the National Institute on Aging (NIA) within the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The contractor will independently provide support services to satisfy the overall operational objectives of our long-read sequencing group at the Center for Alzheimers and Related Dementias.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Perform fundamental procedures required for research projects related to long-read sequencing
Perform a variety of laboratory techniques and procedures
Perform experiments on samples according to sequencing protocols.
Perform routine experiments and tests; follow established procedures and protocols
Convey and discuss research results with team lab members
Update and maintain written laboratory records of the work.
Collect and enter research data into laboratory notebooks and databases
Assemble and format test results
Maintain and update laboratory notebooks and databases; and enter experimental data into spreadsheet and conduct statistical analysis.
Collect data and prepare for analysis and interpretation. Prepare results and conclusions in written, tabular, and graphic form.
Interpret results of initial analysis to reveal conclusions and shortcomings.
Work with staff on performing various experiments and procedures related to long-read sequencing of DNA and RNA samples.
Provide support to laboratory staff in establishing and optimizing SOPs and protocols for processing long-read data.
Perform library preparation of samples for long-read DNA and RNA sequencing
Store new samples, update databases retrieve samples with proper authorization
Perform QC procedures necessary to ensure the accuracy of each test system, sample processing, storage and inventory or samples.
Perform processing, description, and analysis of samples.
Ensure that supplies and consumables are ready and on hand as necessary for maximum efficiency in the laboratory.
Provide experimental progress updates on procedures performed in the laboratory. 3
Prepare reports and summaries based on results and findings. 4
Record details of experiment procedures, results, and protocols. 5
Train new staff on the use, calibration, and maintenance of laboratory equipment . 1
Train new laboratory members in the correct use of equipment, application of techniques, and laboratory procedures. 2
Provide a broad range of technical assistance to laboratory members.
Keep accurate records of daily experiments and results, including research documentation.
Prepare reports, online spreadsheets and slides for presentation and/or publication; assist in writing and editing scientific manuscripts.
Attend weekly group meetings and present on ongoing research and findings
Prepares materials and equipment for experiments
Process and organize multiple samples simultaneously
Work with a variety of routine and specialized laboratory instruments and equipment.
Ensure that all specimens and equipment necessary for experiments are available and in good order
Prepare specimens and equipment for use in the laboratory
Perform processing, description, and analysis of specimens.
Ensure that supplies and consumables are ready and on hand as necessary for maximum efficiency in the laboratory
Order and maintain laboratory supplies, reagents, and equipment
Monitor equipment performance and maintenance schedules.
Coordinate general laboratory maintenance, including equipment upkeep and calibration.
Operate and maintain instrumentation for long-read sequencing of DNA and RNA samples.
Perform fundamental procedures required for research projects
Perform a variety of laboratory techniques and procedures
Perform routine analysis and tests on specimens in the laboratory.
Assist in troubleshooting and calibrating various laboratory equipment and instruments
Lead work to optimize DNA and RNA isolation protocols for cell, blood, and tissue samples for long-read sequencing
Work products and documents related to conducting wet lab work, including data QC and presenting methodologies in written and figure formats – Ad-Hoc
Work products and documents related to identifying/recommending resolutions to discrepancies and/or appropriate data use, record, or report – Ad-Hoc
Work products and documents related to recording daily experiments and results, preparing reports, spreadsheets, and slides for presentation and/or publications – Ad-Hoc
Work products and documents related to maintaining the laboratorys supplies, equipment, and experimental records. – Ad-Hoc
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a related discipline.
Minimum of four (4) years of related experience required.
Experience performing routine laboratory analyses and procedures.
Knowledge of proper laboratory disposal methods and procedures.
Skilled in MS Office.
Minimum Qualifications:
Ability to multi-task and pay close attention to detail.
Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.
Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
