The Opportunity

Black & Veatch is seeking a Managing Consultant level professional to join our team of consultants, strategic advisors, technology specialists, and energy industry respected subject matter experts. The Managing Consultant will support the development and execution of projects in the growing the Sustainability Solutions business. As a Managing Consultant, you will have the opportunity to: #LI-NK1 #LI-Hybrid

Provide technical or industry knowledge to contribute to the completion of multiple engagement phases.

Demonstrate capabilities with moderate level of oversight and collaboration with more senior level professionals; manage projects from prospect to client deliverable. 

Identify, develop, sell, and direct innovative strategy solutions addressing complex problems and market trends related to the transformation of the energy industry targeting key stakeholders including utilities, commercial and industrial customers, developers.

Support strategic engagements with new and existing clients working independently as well as with the broader sales and business line teams, with an emphasis on sales and account growth and profitability.

Collaborate with Black & Veatch’s sales, industry sector, and advisory colleagues/teams to develop and provide integrated solutions across energy, water, and waste markets.

Key Responsibilities

The ideal candidate must have a strong desire to create and cultivate the group’s business vision – which is to be the leading sustainable consulting and EPC firm – by providing our clients with the strategy, concepts and insights, analytical techniques, implementation capabilities, and thought leadership to understand, address, and operate successfully within asset, investment, and critical infrastructure solutions in the energy industry and adjacent sectors. Key responsibilities include:

Support the development, implementation, and management of the Sustainability Solutions business plan to grow the level of business and client base and support the acquisition of new clients and engagements. 

Develop, market, sell, and deliver world-class strategy solutions across the industries served by Black & Veatch with a holistic, multi-disciplinary approach that integrates strategic, financial advisory services for key stakeholders, private and investor-owned utility companies, commercial and industrial customers, wholesale operators, generators, municipalities, government agencies, and technology solution providers.

Generate new and add-on business, including new contracts, contract extensions, renewals, and increased scope with focus on industries and clients in the areas of strategy and planning.

Develop long-term project and business advisory relationships with a wide range of clients.

Be responsible for all aspects of assigned engagements including conducting quality assurance reviews on their own and others work.

Closely interact with members of Black & Veatch’s sales, regulatory, infrastructure modernization and connected customer teams to drive the development, selling, and delivery of multi-functional business solutions. 

Be an active participant in industry groups and have a well-established network with executives within the energy industry

Preferred Qualifications


7 years managing complex energy projects/initiatives

7 years in a business/consulting environment with experience that includes: successfully managing and executing work on multiple engagements simultaneously, strong knowledge and understanding of the energy industry; knowledge of industry business drivers and transformation drivers and impacts, and deep understanding of current policy and mega trends in energy markets

Experience related to one or more of the following Sustainability areas: decarbonization, distributed energy resources, electric vehicles, integrated energy service platforms/financial modeling, low carbon fuels

Excellent communication/ presentation skills (written, verbal)

Masters degree preferred in energy-related policy, finance, or energy-adjacent focus

Certifications related to area of expertise, where applicable preferred

Experience & perspectives in multiple facets of energy markets (wholesale, retail, financial, technologies, policy)

Proven experience facilitating collaboration among cross-functional, highly technical teams

Demonstrated ability to translate complex findings into executable strategic insights and recommendations for both executive and mid-management stakeholders

Highly developed organizational and management skills

Cognitive flexibility, intellectual curiosity

Demonstrated ability to develop business insights & new/creative ways of solving challenges

Desire to work in face-paced, start-up like environment where deliverables & tasks may frequently change

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelors Degree or relevant work experience.

7 years experience in a business/consulting environment. All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.
